Snowshoing: Plateau des glières

Snowshoing: Plateau des glières

The Glières Plateau was a high place of French resistance during the Second World War where many resistance fighters took refuge during the winter of 1944 waiting to receive weapons airdrops from the allies. From a topographical point of view, it is a magnificent plateau located at 1400m, dotted with spruce forests and prairies, which in some aspects resembles the great expanses of Canada. This combe configuration allows for better snow conservation and ensures that we can make our tracks in good quality snow most of the winter. The area is wild and unspoiled because it is far away from alpine ski resorts. The only ski activity practiced on the plateau is cross-country skiing. It is therefore a paradise for snowshoeing because there are many possibilities to go off-trail and the terrain is perfectly adapted. Thus you will have much more chance to meet animal tracks that your guide will teach you to recognize and who knows maybe it will be a wolf!

Snowshoeing in a place full of history

Snowshoeing in a place full of history

As huge and wild place, the Plateau des Glièrespropose several snowshoeing routes from less than 1hour driving from Annecy

At half-day (about 3 hours), we will move between forest and clearings near the Col des Glières either on the sector of the wetlands, on the plain of Dran or on the mountain of Frêtes.
For the full day (4 to 7 hours of walking), the possibilities are much more extensive. Les chalets des Auges is a classic and intermediate level itinerary that will lead us to a sublime viewpoint on the Aravis mountain range and the Mont-Blanc in the background. The large loop of Les Glières, which goes through the dairy field and the Spée pass is a wild itinerary but also more challenging for the more sporty ones. The Ablon valley with its climbing walls is a more intimate itinerary because it is further away from the cross-country skiing area.

Level required for this outing: From beginner to expert (See the article on snowshoe levels for self-assessment)

You have understood that the choice is wide and the mountain leader in charge of the outing will adapt the itinerary to the level of the group and to the weather and snow conditions to ensure your safety and for everyone to enjoy themselves.

Want to discover other snowshoeing experiences? We also propose Rando raquettes au Grand-Bornand // Apéro raquettes soleil couchant à Annecy
