What Does a Vallée Blanche Descent Involve?
Meeting in Chamonix
Meet your guide near the Aiguille du Midi cable car. After receiving the technical equipment and a briefing on the conditions and safety instructions, you will head into the high mountains.
From the Aiguille du Midi to the Vallée Blanche
The cable car takes you into the heart of the Mont Blanc massif. After descending the Aiguille du Midi ridge, you put on your skis and enter the spectacular glacial environment of the Vallée Blanche.
Which Vallée Blanche Itinerary?
There is not just one Vallée Blanche route. Depending on snow cover, glacier conditions and the participants’ skiing ability, your guide will choose the most suitable itinerary: Classic Vallée Blanche, Petit Envers, Grand Envers or another variation adapted to the conditions of the day.
The Mer de Glace and Return to Chamonix
The descent takes you through an exceptional high-mountain environment, surrounded by the major peaks of the Mont Blanc massif. The return to Chamonix varies depending on snow cover and current conditions.
Practical Information
Duration
Allow approximately 5 hours from the departure of the Aiguille du Midi cable car to your return to the valley. The duration may vary depending on the conditions, the chosen itinerary and the pace of the group.
Lift Passes
The lift pass for the Aiguille du Midi and Montenvers is available for €105 per participant.
This pass must be paid for even if the Montenvers is ultimately not used for the return. No refund can be provided, particularly if conditions allow you to ski all the way back down to the valley.
You may purchase your lift pass yourself on site. In this case, please allow approximately 30 additional minutes before departure.
Required Skiing Level for the Vallée Blanche
The Vallée Blanche is an unmarked high-mountain itinerary requiring solid skiing skills in all types of snow.
In Normal Conditions
You must be able to link controlled short turns on a narrow, steep and mogulled black run. The minimum required level corresponds to Class 3.
This trip is not recommended for people with heart conditions, particularly due to the altitude and physical effort involved.
If the guide considers that your skiing level is insufficient to complete the descent safely, you will be required to return by cable car. No refund will be provided.
In Fresh Snow Conditions
After fresh snowfall, the descent becomes more demanding. You must be able to ski through several dozen centimetres of untracked powder while maintaining control of your speed and turns. A Class 4 to 5 level is then required.
Skis suitable for deep snow are mandatory, with a minimum waist width of 90 mm.
The guide has the final say regarding the itinerary. The route will be adapted according to the group’s skiing level, glacier conditions, snow cover and the safety conditions on the day.
