Your Finnmark Ski Touring Itinerary
The itinerary below is provided as a guideline. As with any ski touring trip in Norway, the final routes are selected each day according to the weather, snowpack stability, visibility and the ability of the group.This journey explores several of Finnmark’s most iconic ski-touring areas and showcases some of the finest terrain in Northern Norway. The guides always seek out the best available conditions in order to maximise both skiing quality and group safety.Throughout the week, participants may explore areas such as Langfjordbotn, Jøkelfjord, Øksfjord, Nusvåg and Bursfjord, combining Arctic fjords, glaciers, remote valleys and sea-facing summits.

DAY 1 – ARRIVAL IN ALTA AND TRANSFER TO FINNMARK

Arrival at Alta Airport, gateway to the remote wilderness of Finnmark, Northern Norway.

Meet your guide and transfer to the lodge. After settling into your accommodation, the group gathers for a trip presentation, equipment check and avalanche safety briefing.

This first evening provides an opportunity to discover the unique atmosphere of Arctic Norway and prepare for the ski-touring adventure ahead.

Dinner at the lodge and overnight stay.

DAY 2 – FIRST DAY OF SKI TOURING IN LANGFJORDBOTN

Our first day of ski touring in Finnmark takes place in the spectacular area of Langfjordbotn.

The objective of the day is to discover the local snow conditions, evaluate the group’s pace and become familiar with the Arctic terrain.

The ascent leads to a panoramic summit overlooking fjords, mountains and the vast landscapes of Northern Norway.

Packed lunch in the mountains.

Dinner and overnight stay at the lodge.

DAY 3 – SKI TOURING ABOVE THE GLACIERS OF JØKELFJORD

Today we explore the remarkable area of Jøkelfjord, one of the highlights of ski touring in Norway.

Depending on local conditions, access may involve a short transfer by motorboat, providing a unique approach through one of Finnmark’s most impressive fjord landscapes.

The route climbs towards a summit offering outstanding views over Arctic glaciers descending towards the sea.

Return to the lodge in the evening.

Dinner and overnight stay.

DAY 4 – SKI TOURING IN ØKSFJORD

Transfer to Øksfjord, a spectacular area where mountains rise directly above the Arctic coastline.

This sector offers some of the most aesthetic ski touring routes in Finnmark, with long descents overlooking fjords, fishing villages and snow-covered peaks.

The itinerary is selected according to weather, snowpack stability and group ability.

Packed lunch in the mountains.

Dinner and overnight stay at the lodge.

DAY 5 – ARCTIC SKI TOURING IN NUSVÅG

Today we head to the remote fjord of Nusvåg, one of Finnmark’s hidden gems for Arctic ski touring.

Access may involve a ferry crossing depending on local logistics and weather conditions.

The route offers an exceptional combination of sea views, untouched terrain and Northern Norway’s characteristic maritime landscape.

After the ski tour, return to the lodge.

Dinner and overnight stay.

DAY 6 – SEEKING THE BEST SNOW CONDITIONS IN FINNMARK

One of the great advantages of ski touring in Finnmark is the diversity of accessible terrain.

Today the guide selects the area offering the best snow quality, visibility and weather conditions.

The itinerary may lead to a new valley, a panoramic ridge or another summit overlooking the Arctic fjords.

The flexibility of the programme allows the group to maximise skiing quality throughout the week.

DAY 7 – FINAL SKI TOURING DAY IN BURSFJORD

Our last major ski-touring objective takes place in Bursfjord, a spectacular area renowned for its fjord scenery and secluded mountain terrain.

The chosen route offers a final opportunity to experience the unique combination of Arctic wilderness, sea views and mountain skiing that makes ski touring in Northern Norway so special.

At the end of the day, return to the lodge, pack equipment and enjoy a final evening with the group.

DAY 8 – RETURN TO ALTA

Breakfast at the lodge.

Transfer to Alta Airport and departure.

This marks the end of your ski touring holiday in Finnmark, Norway.

No skiing is planned on this final day.

Required Level

Level S3 – Strong Intermediate

This trip is designed for skiers who already have ski touring experience and wish to explore an Arctic mountain environment.

Physical Requirements
✓ Ability to complete six consecutive ski touring days.
✓ Ability to regularly achieve between 800 and 1,200 metres of vertical ascent per day.
✓ Ability to participate in mountain days lasting between 5 and 8 hours.
✓ Ability to carry a backpack containing avalanche safety equipment, personal clothing and a packed lunch.
✓ Preparedness for cold temperatures, wind and rapidly changing Arctic weather conditions.

Technical Requirements

✓ Very good all-mountain skiing ability.
✓ Strong off-piste skiing skills.
✓ Ability to ski confidently in powder, tracked snow, wind-affected snow and crust conditions.
✓ Ability to ski slopes that may occasionally reach 35–40 degrees.
✓ Good uphill technique and kick-turn skills.
✓ Possible use of ski crampons, lightweight crampons or an ice axe depending on conditions and selected routes.

Previous Experience

Regular ski touring experience is essential.
Participants should be autonomous with their personal equipment, comfortable moving in a guided group and familiar with the basics of avalanche safety equipment.
As an indication, the required level corresponds to regular ski touring in mountain areas such as the Aravis, Beaufortain, Vanoise or Chablais ranges.

Your Base Camp in Finnmark

The group stays in a comfortable lodge located in the Alta region, providing easy access to the main ski-touring sectors of Finnmark.
The accommodation allows daily exploration of renowned areas such as Langfjordbotn, Jøkelfjord, Øksfjord, Nusvåg and Bursfjord.
Rooms are shared according to lodge configuration and group composition.
Single-room occupancy may be available upon request and subject to availability.

Equipment to bring

Ski touring equipment: skis with bindings (80–100 mm underfoot) + mandatory ski crampons, ski touring boots, and climbing skins

Personal clothing and gear

1 ski mask for bad weather + sunglasses

Sleeping bag liner and/or sleeping bag (fleece blanket provided at the refuge)

Backpack: minimum 30 liters

2 pairs of warm, waterproof gloves or mittens

Gore-Tex jacket and pants, or equivalent, for skiing in harsh conditions (snow and blizzard)
