To talk about the Fitoja-Express is, above all, to talk about the Fitoja Chamber, a true caving gem in the Bauges. 400 metres long and 50 metres wide, this immense chamber is brimming with numerous formations. Between the stalagmites several metres high and the millimetre-sized calcite crystals, it would take several days to see it all.
Previously reserved for experienced cavers, for the past ten years or so it has been accessible in just a few hours via this newly discovered entrance.
A benchmark for caving in the Bauges!
The route to the Fitoja chamber is essentially vertical: from the entrance to the far end, a series of shafts follow one after another, and you hardly ever let go of the rope. The deepest shaft is 40 metres: handrail, rope split, rope deviation. A few narrow sections are interspersed between the rope descents, but they are never very long.
The arrival in the chamber is spectacular, with the river roaring and the ceiling soaring high; exploring this chamber takes some time if you wish to discover its finest fistuleuses and hidden concretions. An exceptional underground landscape in the Bauges massif!
During the descent and ascent, you handle the equipment to move independently on a rope. Descenders, lanyards, ascenders, foot loops: it’s an excellent way to hone your caving techniques. The cave is accessible all year round; the weather isn’t a major issue unless there is very heavy rainfall.
Our caving guides and instructors are all state-certified. They have all the necessary equipment for rescue operations and organising caving trips. They will be on hand to advise you and help you discover the activity in a friendly atmosphere and in small groups. Most of our guides are locals from the Bornes, Bauges and Aravis regions, and they can advise you on other fun activities or outdoor sports.
