On Mount Parmelan, above Annecy, lies the Grande Glacière du Parmelan. This cave is unique in that it is filled with a massive accumulation of ice that is hundreds of years old. Access in winter requires snowshoes, and you’ll need crampons to get around inside the cave. A frozen version of caving for a refreshing winter exploration!
The descent can be made via a 50-meter shaft or a snow slope. You then proceed through the vast chamber before descending beneath its floor to reach the “climbers’ chamber” at -60 meters. An icy, snow-covered underground landscape awaits at the bottom of this ice cave. Several rope sections, both on the descent and the ascent using ascenders, add to the adventure. Once on the ice, you’ll need to walk with crampons and an ice axe.
Weather conditions must be favorable for this exploration; there is no risk of rising water levels in this cave.
