Ski touring in Narvik: wild and undiscovered Norway
The Narvik region, located in northern Norway, is still a relatively undiscovered destination for ski touring. Yet it has all the ingredients for a great ski journey: spectacular fjords, summits accessible from sea level, often generous snow conditions, and vast landscapes where you ski facing the Arctic Ocean.
Unlike better-known areas such as the Lofoten Islands or the Lyngen Alps, Narvik stands out for its raw character, peaceful atmosphere, and the diversity of its terrain. The region offers everything from panoramic ski touring routes to steeper slopes, wild bowls, couloirs, ridges, and summits with outstanding views over the Norwegian fjords.

A trip between fjords, summits and Arctic atmosphere
Ski touring around Narvik offers a very special atmosphere. Some tours can start close to sea level, before climbing towards summits that rise directly above the fjords. This constant proximity between water, snow and mountains gives the trip a particularly aesthetic dimension.
Each day is built around the conditions of the moment. Depending on the weather, snowpack stability and the group’s fitness, the guide chooses the most suitable itinerary: a panoramic summit, a beautiful descent, a sheltered valley, a more alpine route, or an easier day to recover.
Norway is a major ski touring destination thanks to the diversity of its terrain, its wide-open spaces and its countless route possibilities, from classic areas such as Lyngen and the Lofoten Islands to wilder regions such as Narvik, Bodø, Finnmark and Sunnmøre.
A possible alpine dimension depending on conditions
For experienced groups, the Narvik region also offers the possibility of more alpine itineraries: steep slopes, couloirs, rocky ridges, sections requiring crampons, or more committing lines. These options are never systematic and always remain subject to the guide’s assessment.
In the mountains, zero risk does not exist. The aim is therefore to practise with rigorous risk management: weather analysis, route choice, snowpack assessment, adaptation to the group’s level, use of safety equipment, and the ability to turn back or modify the programme if necessary. Mountain professionals emphasise the importance of prevention, training and guiding to reduce accident risk, without ever promising a complete absence of danger.

Our base camp: Efjord and Stetind Resort – Cabin Stetind
For this trip, our base camp is located at Efjord and Stetind Resort, near Ballangen, in the Narvik region. This spacious cabin provides an ideal setting for a ski touring trip in Norway: comfortable accommodation, a fully equipped kitchen, living room, terrace, and views over the sea, lakes and surrounding mountains.
Set in a wild environment between fjord and mountain, the accommodation allows us to explore different ski sectors each day around Efjord, Narvik, Ballangen and Stetind. Stetind, one of Norway’s emblematic mountains, gives the trip a unique atmosphere: a powerful, mineral and Arctic setting, perfect for a full immersion in Nordland.
After the ski days, the cabin becomes a true place of recovery: comfortable living space, kitchen for meals, terrace, sauna, on-site parking and panoramic views over the Norwegian landscapes.
Indicative programme
Day 1 – Arrival at Evenes / Harstad-Narvik
Arrival at Evenes / Harstad-Narvik Airport, group welcome, then transfer to the base camp in the Efjord and Ballangen area. Installation at the cabin, presentation of the trip, equipment check and safety briefing with the guide.
Overnight at the cabin.
Day 2 – First ski touring outing
First ski day to get familiar with the Norwegian terrain. The guide chooses an itinerary adapted to the current conditions in order to assess the group’s level, routines and snow quality.
Objective: warm-up day, first views over the fjords and adaptation to the rhythm of the trip.

Days 3 to 6 – Ski touring around Narvik, Efjord and Ballangen
Each day is organised according to weather and snow conditions. There are many possibilities: panoramic summits, beautiful slopes above the fjords, wild valleys, itineraries close to Stetind, or more sheltered sectors depending on the weather.
When conditions are favourable and the group’s level allows it, the guide may suggest more alpine itineraries: sustained slopes, couloirs, ridge sections or occasional progress with crampons.
The programme is deliberately flexible in order to take advantage of the best available conditions each day.
Overnights at the cabin.
Day 7 – Last ski day or recovery itinerary
Depending on the group’s fitness, the conditions and the departure schedule for the following day, a final ski touring outing will be organised in the area. The guide may choose an aesthetic summit, a shorter route, or an itinerary allowing the group to enjoy the Arctic landscapes one last time.
Return to the cabin, equipment packing and final evening in Norway.
Day 8 – Return transfer
Transfer to Evenes / Harstad-Narvik Airport and end of the trip.

The programme above is given as an indication only. In ski touring, particularly in Northern Norway, the final itinerary always depends on the weather, visibility, wind, snowpack stability, the group’s fitness and the guide’s decisions.
