Introduction to Mountaineering – Glacier Hike (Mont Blanc Massif)

A glacier hike is an ideal first step into the high mountains: you’ll make your way roped together across a glacier, up close to crevasses, seracs and ice formations, in a unique alpine setting.  The whole experience is led by a U.I.A.G.M-certified high-mountain guide, ensuring an educational, friendly and safe adventure.

We offer a high-mountain excursion with several options depending on the atmosphere you’re looking for and your comfort at altitude: crossing the Vallée Blanche, the Col d’Entréves...

Provisional itinerary: Starting from the Aiguille du Midi (high-altitude glacier trek: Col du Midi, Col d’Entréves, crossing of the Vallée Blanche), the route will be finalised with your guide, who will assess your ability

A classic Alpine trek, in the heart of the Mont Blanc glaciers.  The route usually starts from the Aiguille du Midi (or from Pointe Helbronner, 3,462 m), before a panoramic glacier traverse through the heart of the glaciers. Throughout the route, you’ll be surrounded by spectacular scenery, passing through crevassed areas, seracs and vast expanses of ice, with unbroken views of the massif’s iconic peaks.

Liste du matériel.

This traverse offers a true immersion in the high-mountain environment: we take the time to kit up, understand the terrain, learn the basics of glacier travel… and then enjoy a magnificent trek, guided and tailored to the group’s ability.

  • Altitude: 3,462 m → 3,500–3,600 m (depending on route)
  • Pace / elevation gain per hour: approx. 250–300 m/h whilst traversing the glacier
  • Duration: 4 to 6 hours (depending on conditions and the group’s ability)
  • Who is it for? : An exceptional excursion designed for those wishing to familiarise themselves with high-altitude mountain environments, led by a guide

What you will experience (and learn)

  • Understanding the glacial environment: reading the terrain, seracs, crevasse-filled areas, route selection
  • Discovering the basics of roped progression: distance, pace, positioning, communication within the rope team
  • Learning the right safety reflexes in high mountains, adapted to the group and conditions
  • Experiencing a panoramic alpine adventure, in a unique atmosphere, at the heart of the Mont Blanc massif

Indicative itinerary (provisional programme)

  • Welcome & briefing: objectives for the day, weather/conditions, safety rules
  • Equipment: fitting gear, forming the rope team, progression instructions
  • Glacier crossing: moving between seracs and crevassed areas, regular breaks, observation of the terrain
  • Arrival: debrief and feedback

Important: the route and exact itinerary may be adapted by the guide depending on weather/glacier conditions and the participants’ ability. In the mountains, safety remains the priority.
