Come and discover the fascinating world of alpine ridges during an immersive 3-day course designed for mountain enthusiasts who want to learn the technical and safety basics of climbing on rocky terrain. Supervised by a high mountain guide, this course will enable you to: Learn the fundamentals of short rope, simultaneous and moving rope climbing. Understand the principles of safety management on a ridge: route choice, communication, placement of belay points. Climb iconic ridges in the region, in an exceptional natural setting between lakes and peaks. Learning objectives: -Know how to rope up and progress efficiently on ridges. -Manage the risks associated with exposure and falling. -Develop your autonomy on easy to moderate ridge routes. Who is it for? This course is aimed at climbers who already have experience in alpine hiking or multi-pitch cliff climbing and who wish to make the transition to rock climbing.

First steps on the Arête

Location: Massif des Bornes – Aravis
Supervision: High mountain guide
Audience: Those with experience in alpine hiking or climbing who wish to progress to rock climbing

 

Day 1 – Fundamentals & Basic Techniques

Objective: to lay the technical and safety foundations for ridge climbing

  • Welcome, presentation of the course and participants
  • Reminder of safety principles on ridges
  • Presentation of different rope techniques:
  • Short rope
  • Simultaneous progression
  • On the move
  • Easy route for immediate practical application
  • Workshop on different types of anchors:
  • Straps, nuts, friends, pitons
  • Use of rock ledges and trees
  • Training in quick and efficient rope handling

Day 2 – Supervised Autonomy & Route Management

Objective: to prepare and manage a route in supervised autonomy

  • Route preparation:
  • Reading the guidebook, anticipating difficulties
  • Time management and plan B
  • Application on a suitable route
  • Work on rope management while moving
  • Use of chest loops
  • Practical workshops:
  • Setting up abseils
  • Escape techniques in case of unforeseen events

Day 3 – Real-life situations & autonomy

Objective: apply all skills on a long and varied route

  • Choosing a route suited to the weather and the group's level
  • Full application of the techniques learned in previous days
  • Independent management of the route, pace and safety
  • Assessment of skills acquired and personalised feedback
  • End of the course with a convivial get-together

Good to know about the training
The basics of rock climbing / Progressing on ridges

The price include
Supervision for 3 days by a mountain guide.
Loan of equipment (harness, helmet, crampons and ice axes) according to availability.
The price doesn't include
Transport to the meeting point.
Transport during the course is provided by carpooling between participants.
Search and rescue assistance, mountain rescue, repatriation [mandatory].
Accommodation, meals and transport during the stay.
Required level
You must be capable of rock climbing at a minimum level 4 and be physically fit enough to hike for 4 to 5 hours.

You must have already completed the ‘basics of rock climbing’ and ‘basics of multi-pitch climbing’ courses or have proven experience in multi-pitch rock climbing.
Group
Stage confirmé à partir de 4 participants - Jusqu'à 6 participants / 1 guide de haute montagne.
Safety
The guide reserves the right to modify or interrupt the programme at any time due to weather conditions, insufficient technical or physical ability of participants, or safety reasons.
Time and meeting place
Your guide will contact you to confirm the exact time and place of the meeting on Day 1, in general the meeting is scheduled for around 8.30am on Day 1 and the course finishes around 3-4pm on
