Aiguille du Tour (3,540 m) with a guide – The first mountaineering ascent in the Mont Blanc massif

2 days glacier hike at the Aiguille du Tour

An ideal first high-mountain climb

The Aiguille du Tour (3,540 m) is one of the best peaks for discovering mountaineering in the Mont Blanc massif. Situated between the Glacier du Tour on the French side and the Glacier de Trient on the Swiss side, this route offers a complete immersion in the world of high-mountain climbing.

Accompanied by a high-mountain guide, you will learn to move roped-up on a glacier, use crampons and an ice axe, and manage your exertion at altitude. The route alternates between an approach walk, glacier traverses and easy rocky sections to reach a panoramic summit facing Mont Blanc, the Aiguille Verte, the Chardonnet and the great peaks of Chamonix.

This climb is perfect for fit individuals looking for their first mountaineering experience, to sleep in a mountain hut and discover the unique thrills of a high-altitude trek. Although technically accessible, the Aiguille du Tour requires a good level of fitness and a willingness to walk for several hours with a rucksack at altitude.

Why choose this climb?

  • An iconic peak in the Mont Blanc massif
  • A perfect route for beginners to mountaineering
  • A night in the high-altitude Albert 1er refuge
  • An introduction to glacier traversing techniques
  • A varied route: trail, moraine, glacier, snow and rock
  • Exceptional views of the Chamonix peaks
  • Supervision provided by a qualified mountain guide
  • The Albert 1er refuge is situated above the Tour Glacier in the Mont Blanc massif and serves as a classic gateway for routes such as the Aiguille du Tour, the Chardonnet or the Aiguille d’Argentière.

Detailed itinerary

Day 1 – Ascent to the Albert 1er refuge

  • Meeting point: Argentière / Le Tour car park, in the morning
  • Access: Le Tour ski lifts (subject to opening times)
  • Walk: approx. 1½ to 2 hours to the refuge
  • Elevation gain: approx. 550 to 600 m depending on the route
  • Overnight: Albert 1er refuge, in a mixed-gender dormitory
  • After meeting your guide, you’ll head to the Tour area and take the ski lifts towards Charamillon or the Col de Balme, depending on the day’s plan. The approach walk takes you to the Albert 1er refuge, situated at an altitude of around 2,700 m.

The afternoon is spent familiarising yourself with the equipment and, weather permitting, an introduction to basic techniques: cramponing, roping up, using an ice axe and moving on snow or ice.

Day 2 – Ascent of the Aiguille du Tour 3,540 m

  • Departure: early in the morning, often using headlamps
  • Terrain: Tour Glacier, Col Supérieur du Tour, final ridge
  • Summit: Aiguille du Tour 3,540 m
  • Walking time: approximately 7–8 hours in total
  • Elevation gain: approximately 830–840 m from the refuge
  • Return: Tour car park at the end of the day

The hike starts early from the refuge to take advantage of the best snow conditions. You will progress roped up across the Tour Glacier to the Col Supérieur du Tour, before reaching the summit section of the Aiguille du Tour. The final ascent combines glacier and easy rocky sections.
At the summit, the view opens up to the Tour and Trient glaciers, the Aiguille Verte, the Chardonnet, the Swiss peaks and the entire Mont Blanc massif.
The return is via the same route, with a descent to the refuge and then to the Tour car park at the end of the day. The guide may adapt the itinerary depending on the weather, mountain conditions and the group’s ability.

F.A.Q
Is the Aiguille du Tour suitable for beginners?

Yes, the Aiguille du Tour is considered one of the most suitable routes for a first mountaineering experience in the Mont Blanc massif. However, it remains a high-altitude route that requires a good level of fitness.

Do I need to have done mountaineering before?

No, it’s not essential. This climb is specifically designed to teach the basics of mountaineering: crampon use, roped progression, ice axe use and moving on a glacier.

How long does the climb take?

The activity takes place over 2 days with an overnight stay at the Albert 1er refuge. On the day of the summit attempt, the walk takes around 7 to 8 hours depending on conditions and the group’s pace.

Where do we stay overnight during the climb?

We spend the night at the Albert 1er refuge, situated above the Tour Glacier, in a mixed-gender dormitory.

What level of fitness is required?

You must be in good physical shape, take regular exercise and be able to walk for several hours with a rucksack at high altitude.

What equipment should I bring?

You should bring clothing suitable for high-altitude mountaineering, crampon-compatible mountaineering boots, category 4 sunglasses, a head torch, a rucksack, gloves, a waterproof jacket, a sleeping bag liner and snacks. Technical equipment generally includes crampons, an ice axe, a harness and a helmet.

Is reaching the summit guaranteed?

No. In the high mountains, reaching the summit is never guaranteed. The guide adapts the trip according to the weather, the condition of the glacier, snow conditions and the participants’ ability.
Transport and carpooling
For practical reasons relating to the wide range of locations from which participants are travelling, we are unable to organise or cover the cost of transport.
Participants are therefore responsible for their own transport and must make their own arrangements.
At the very least, participants must provide a lift for the guide from Chamonix to the activity’s starting point and back.
Carpooling may also be arranged from Annecy between participants and the guide, although this does not constitute a formal arrangement on our part.
Any transport organised by the guides is always subject to a prior quotation.
Insurances
Assistance – Rescue and Repatriation (compulsory)
To ensure your safety, taking out ‘assistance – repatriation’ insurance is essential for taking part in our trips.
Your cover must include high-altitude mountain activities, and in particular search and rescue costs, including those incurred by helicopter.
If you do not have suitable insurance, we can offer you a comprehensive solution perfectly tailored to your activities, at a rate of €5 per day.

Cancellation Insurance (peace of mind option)
To ensure you can book your trip with complete peace of mind, we offer ‘cancellation’ insurance at a rate of €12 per day, to be taken out when you register.
This cover protects you between the booking date and departure, in the event of unforeseen circumstances preventing you from taking part in the holiday. The cancellation fees set out in our terms and conditions may then be covered, provided the reason is covered by the insurance.
Please note that this insurance does not take into account the sporting nature of the activities on offer.
In the event of cancellation, the claim must be made within 5 days of the event, directly to the insurer.

Important information

Some credit cards include insurance cover: we advise you to check the terms and conditions associated with your card.
Insurance policies taken out are non-refundable.
Time and meeting point
We will meet in Chamonix early in the morning at the Tour ski lift car park to organise the outing.
The final times and meeting points will be confirmed by the guide no later than 48 hours before departure; the guide will also provide the latest logistical details required to ensure the activity runs smoothly.
Prices
Price for 2 participants: €940 per participant
Price for 3 participants: €690 per participant

Impotant note
In case of bad weather conditions announced before the departure, your guide will propose you to postpone your ascent in the summer, or the following summer, according to the availability of the huts.

As a mountain professional, the guide reserves the right to adapt, modify or shorten the itinerary according to the weather conditions and/or the level of one or several participants. In this case, no refund will be made.

Any day of supervision added to the initial program will be charged at 400€ / day (excluding accommodation, food and transport costs)
