Via Ferrata de Thônes

Via Ferrata de Thônes

The via ferrata of Thônes is located in the rock of the Calvaries in-above Thônes, otherwise known as the capital of Reblochon Fermier, famous cheese from the Aravis Valley. This via ferrata is of intermediate difficulty between the Via Ferrata of Clusaz and the Via Ferrata of Grand-Bornand. It features an air monkey bridge from the start, and many steep and athletic sections where you have to climb on metal bars. The atmosphere is ethereal above Thônes and the landscape is bucolic facing the Tournette mountain.

A via ferrata between lake and mountain

A via ferrata between lake and mountain

The via ferrata of Thônes gives you the opportunity to enjoy a vertical activity surrounded by nature in the Massif des Aravis. Easy access by car, bus or bike from Annecy (approximately 25 min driving) and of an intermediate level, this via ferrata (also named Roche à l’Agathe) is aimed at sportive people with a good physical condition who reach thrills! The course is built on the rock face : it offers you a perfect concession between thrills and physical effort in front of the beautiful view of the valley.

Meeting point with your guide at the bus station in Thônes for a brief rundown and a reminder of the safety instruction during the activity. Once equipped with your harness, leads via and helmet, let’s go for 15 minutes walk before beginning the difficulties with a  rope ridge and then an athletic overhang. The course is teaming with climbing passages, crossings and obstacles.

This via ferrata also named Roche à l’Agathe is very ethereal and vertical. Fortunately equipment allows us to safely climb up.The ascension is spreaded in 3 steps and difficulty progresses gradually.  Two ways out allow to shorten activity. The last step is the most impressive part of the course because there is a passage with a vertical ladder called “Echelle des sapeurs de l’Empire”. You have to throw it across the drop! But do not stress, your guide will lead all along the course.

On the site, maybe you will see chamois who cross the rock, reaching mountain flowers to eat. This incredible climber will most likely impress you by its agility. Once arrived at the top, the descente takes around 1h and is done using cables.
